If you’ve been following me from the beginning of the blog then you’ve seen my home transform through the many DIY projects I’ve completed and shared. Most were designed to refresh, update and lighten my dark and dated home. After completing so many projects I’ve come to understand the impact even subtle variations of white paint can have on a room. Undertone, room facing light exposure, outdoor landscaping and shade variations all factor into choosing the correct white paint color. All this will factor into whether you will love or hate the final outcome for your own home. To choose the right white it helps to have a basic understanding of the way your own home’s natural light works. Here are some pointers to help you choose the right white paint color for your home and project!
The color I have on my kitchen cabinets (pictured) is White Dove by Benjamin Moore.
Northern Exposure
Sunlight streaming in from the North may create a gray or blue-ish hue.
Southern Exposure
If your room has a window facing South, white walls might appear slightly warmer or softer.
Furniture & Textures
If your room has a significant amount of wooden textures (furniture, ceilings, etc) or boldly colored furniture than it will impact the shade of white as those things will reflect the colors and tones of the fixtures in the room onto the walls.
Indoor Lighting
warm toned bulbs paired with blue hued whites may create a green tinge. In my home I stay away from warm and cool tone indoor lighting.
Greenery
Look outside your windows! If your home is surrounded by greenery, it’s likely even a bright white wall will have a greenish hue during the day.
