CORRECT HAT FOR YOUR FACE

Ever wonder how some hats look so good on certain people?  Or how you try on a hat that looks adorable on your friend but ridiculous on you?  Did you know there’s a perfect hat for every face shape.  Knowing this may help the next time you are trying on hats thinking you are just not a “hat person”.  Everyone is a hat person if they know what works best for them before trying on.  There are six basic face shapes.  Here’s the correct hat for your face shape and what best flatters your look.

Long (rectanglar) Face

Long faces look best in hats with wide brims.  Like cowboy hats or sunhats.  Try on hats that cut across the forehead which will shorten the elongated effect of a long face.  Always avoid beanies for this very reason.  Another option is a trapper hat (the long ear flaps on the sides help balance a long face).

Round Face

Hats that look best on round faces are those that help elongate the shape (exact opposite as above).  The best hat options are angular style hats.  A retro style fedora or cloche are best and wearing a beanie pulled low over face will help elongate it.

Square Face

A square face has strong angular features which can be over exaggerated with the wrong type of hat.  Stay away from hats with similar angles.  Instead grab a hat with some flop to it or a wide brim.  Cloche hats look good on this face shape.  Avoid beanies.

Heart Face

Heart shape faces look best in a baseball cap, newsboy or fedora.  The clipped brim will take away from the wideness of upper face and narrowness of jaw.  Stay away from floppy brims  (wide brims or ok though) or hats with extra volume around the face.  Heart shape faces should also avoid bulky beanies. A thin knit beanie will provide warmth but not add bulk to top of the head.

Oval Face

Lucky you!  You have versatility because a person with an oval face shape looks good in just about any hat style.

Diamond Face

For diamond face shape it is more important to know HOW to wear a hat than it is WHAT hat you wear.  Diamond face shapes have the width across the face and a narrow jawline.  Therefore, pick a pull on you can style further back on head or something with a shallow crown.
