DIY bathroom update on a dime. The key word is update. To accomplish any DIY update on a dime it is important to understand you are updating not renovating. Renovating includes construction, and construction is expensive. For any home DIY update on a dime focus on small but significant changes to update a space. Stay away from grandiose, large scale renovating (and save hundreds of dollars). Here are seven ways for a DIY bathroom update on a dime.
Paint the walls
Refreshing the color of a bathroom makes a significant impact in updating the space. Can be done for the price of a gallon of paint and some elbow grease (painting it yourself will save $). If you struggle with WHAT color to paint a small bathroom, keep this in mind:
- White (there are over 500 shades of white)! One of the easiest ways to give a small bathroom the appearance of a larger space is to layer whites. White walls, white ceiling, white vanity, etc. White throughout the space reflects light instead of absorbing it. It gives an airy, open feel that will make the space seem larger.
- Tone on tone – Not a fan of stark white? Me either. You can still get the big, open and breezy effect in a space by using a tone on tone palette in warm beige, soft grays or event faint hues of powder blue. The overall effect of these “color non colors” is a serene, warm, spa like atmosphere without the harshness of a bright white. For this DIY bathroom update on a dime I used Sherwin Williams Shoji White 7042. I would call it a “greige” color (combo of a very light beige and gray).
Update Towels
Towels can provide additional layering of a white and neutral palette or bring in a pop of color. Either way, bring in some beautiful and high impact towels to update the space and add character. There are inexpensive options on the market varying from vibrant colors, interesting weaves and striking patterns. Currently, Moroccan inspired towels are very popular or go the extra mile and get them monogrammed!
Install Shelving
Shelves are a bathroom necessity. From a design standpoint and from a functionality standpoint. Shelves can create a warmth and softness to a bathroom that is otherwise a cold and clinical space. Plus, provides necessary storage of bathroom items that are accessed frequently. Just make sure you secure the shelves to the wall effectively. Shelving is great but can be tricky to install correctly.
Add Plants
Incorporate plants in all spaces of your home. Plants are especially successful in a bathroom because of all the hard surfaces. Plants provide an element of warmth, life and a sense of energy. Plants effectively add color without competing with any other color in the space. Make room for a plant in any bathroom update!
Update Hardware
Drawer pulls come in many different styles, shapes and colors. Use them to upgrade bathroom (or kitchen). Knobs and pulls can be used interchangeably, knobs are usually used on doors and pulls on drawers. Check out some options for pulls and knobs here.
Update Lighting
Don’t hire an electrician to change a light fixture. Most bathroom light sconces and chandeliers have replaceable shades! The replaceable shades come in many colors and designs for under $20 at most home improvement stores here. If you can screw in a light bulb, you can change a shade on a light fixture. Big impact for very little money. Also, be recognizance of what light bulbs you use in the bathroom. Are the bright white bulbs too harsh? Try swapping them out for day light bulbs or vice versa.
Change the Mirror
Ready cut frameless mirrors are available in many sizes at most home improvement stores. Or find a beautiful, ornamental framed mirrors here. Mirrors come in many colors and frame designed that can pick up a bathroom space.
