DIY REMOVING ORNAMENTAL SHELF RAIL

I did this DIY last Saturday.  A day that I needed a good project to keep my mind off what was originally planned to happen that day.  Last Saturday was (supposed to be) Ella’s commencement graduation ceremony at the University of Tennessee.  The weekend was planned for celebrating Ella with family and friends.  Instead, because of COVID-19 I was home bored, sad and looking for distractions.  So, decided to do an easy kitchen cabinet update.  A DIY removing ornamental shelf rails from the kitchen cabinets.

Shelf Rail

Ornamental shelf rails are attached to all of the cabinet shelves in our kitchen (built in 1996).  It is dated and antiquated.  Behind closed doors the country shaped dowels are not noticeable.  Therefore, I don’t feel those areas are in need of updating.  However, there is a desk area in the kitchen where shelves are exposed.  The ornamental rail is noticeable and dates the space.  It needs to go.

Tools Needed

The only tools needed to remove the ornamental shelf rail is a small hand saw and a block sander Here are a couple hand saws under $10 hand saws HERE and HERE.  Sanding block HERE.

With the handsaw, remove cut through the bottom of each attached dowel of the ornamental chair rail.  Once cut free, remove the chair rail.  The chair rail may be also secured to the shelf with a penny nail on each end.  If so, with a hammer, pry the rail loose from the nail.  Once the rail is removed, lightly sand the areas where the railing was attached.  If necessary, touch up the shelf with stain or paint where the dowels were attached and removed.

This J Crew Tipi sweater in gingham was last year.  So sad they didn’t bring it back this season.  A similar version HERE and HERE.  These slim wide leg high waist linen pants are light and perfect for spring and summer HERE.  My tortoise shell statement earrings are acrylic.  Very lightweight (which is a must for my sensitive ears) HERE.   I’ve been wearing these Rothy’s sneakers a lot lately.  Love the bright white color and they are washable too!  HERE
