GUEST BATHROOM UPDATE

I should call the most recent DIY guest bathroom update a refresh to the refresh.  In January 2020 I did a mini DIY refresh to lighten and brighten the room (blog on that update HERE).  Recently, I decided to “refresh the refresh” and circle back to make the space more functional and brighter with a coastal modern feel.  The DIY guest bathroom update is classic city-chic with a coastal vibe.  Follow my IG stories for my DIY projects being completed in real time!  If you missed the stories on this project you missed my plumbing skills (or lack thereof), a flood, a rescue (from a real plumber), how I built custom wall molding and so much more!  This blog is where we ended up on this DIY project.  For start to finish project updates, tips and how-to’s following me on Instagram us your best bet.  You will see projects before, after and everything in between!  Don’t miss the next DIY project and follow @tami.in.between on the gram (that’s Instagram for you over 40’s) by pressing the button below and clicking “FOLLOW”!

Getting Rid of the Stainless

The first thing I did in the space was spray paint (white satin finish) the stainless steel shower surround and stainless steel toilet pipes.  Our home was built with all commercial toilets (weird right!) that are impossible to hide and decorate around.  I decided to try to “hide” the stainless pipes in plain sight.  Overall, I’m thrilled with how it turned out.  Even the silver shower surround was spray painted to get rid of all the silver.  The spray paint I used HERE.

The Walls

I’m blown away how easy the DIY custom wall molding was to make.  I love the texture, depth and overall aesthetic it provides in this space.  I now want to do this all over my house!  Can you believe I made this custom wall by only using three different types of boards?  The boards I used are HERE, HERE and HERE.  Of course you know how easy it was to create if you watch my Instagram stories!  Follow @tami.in.between on IG if you aren’t already!

The top half of the walls are covered in peel and stick wallpaper HERE!  An easy DIY project (made even easier with a 2nd person helping).  The custom wall molding and remaining walls are painted in Benjamin Moore Pure White in satin sheen.

Cabinet & Faucet

Removing the pedestal sink and replacing it with a cabinet was a MUST.  It also caused me the most headache in this DIY project!  First, I broke the hot water shut off valve which resulted in me having to teach myself (thank you YouTube) how to replace valves.  Second, I accidently flooded the entire room (if you watch my IG stories, you know what happened)!  It was all worth it though because the new cabinet added much needed storage.  I found this 36′ cabinet from Lowes HERE that was mostly assembled (only had to put on legs and shelf).  Even better it is an “all in one” cabinet meaning the cabinet came with a marble countertop and undermount sink!  The only downside was this baby was HEAVY.

I absolutely love the faucet and call me crazy but I think it makes the room!  I knew I wanted cross handles so I worked backwards searching for the perfect faucet and found it HERE.  I should note that this faucet did NOT come with a stopper so I had to buy that separately HERE.

Recycle, Reuse & Repurpose

I always try to recycle, reuse and repurpose when I update spaces.  The brass duck is a garage sale find that I filled with elegant monogrammed disposable cloth napkins HERE.  Post COVID cleanliness has me realizing this hand drying option is more sanitary than guests reusing a single hand towel.

The wall lights are reused from the previous bathroom refresh.  Once bronze in color, I spray painted them vintage gold in satin finish HERE and added the vintage shades that used to be on lamps that belonged to my grandmother.

Accent Color

Since the floor is black tile I needed a black element or two in the room to tie it together.  I accomplished this by adding a modern metal arched mirror HERE and swapped out the silver cabinet pulls for black pulls HERE.  Both in color onyx..

Décor

Keeping the décor fairly simply with a fun blue round mirror, faux 3 ft fiddle leaf plant in a white basket and blue rattan globe light (all from Home Goods).
