MINI HEMLINES

Mini hemlines for inbetweeners – just say NO!  As inbetweeners (not young or old but somewhere in between) our hemlines should be getting longer the older we get.  One of the biggest mistakes I see inbetweeners make is wearing clothes that are too tight or too short.  Aging stylishly is about wearing age appropriate clothes confidently that garners respect and not attention.

Dressing Your Age

The old saying “dressing your age” is antiquated and I truly believe people should dress and style themselves in a way that makes them feel good.  Pink hair at 60, go for it.  Cat eye sunnies at 40, sure why not?  Long boho maxi dresses at 20, yes girl – you don’t need to show it to know you got it!  I’m not advocating us inbetweeners give up all hemlines.  Just the mini.  There are many other better hemline options such as the midi, pencil, a-line, flare and maxi.  Truth is, longer hemlines on inbetweeners are chic, classy and way more stylish.   Age appropriate length hemlines are far more youthful and flattering.  Leave the mini hemline for the yutes!  We’ve got the wisdom, let them have the minis.

Why?

I’ll tell ya why.  Bare legs show our age…especially exposed knees!  Have you inbetweeners taken a good look at your knees lately?  We worry about SPF on our face and necks to mediate the wrinkles but take a gander south and check out those dry and wrinkly pads in the middle of your legs.  Not so pretty, right?  It’s easy (and necessary) to drop that hemline a couple inches.  The only time to break this rule is in the winter when you can pair a short hemline with some black opaque tights and tall boots.  You still get the shorter hemline but the knees are underneath a few layers of style.  The mini hemline is never going to be the right choice if you are over 40 unless you are playing tennis or at the pool (sorry, not even for you Mrs attractive Pilates instructor with the tan and toned legs).  This is not about being a hemline regulator but about being a hemline realist.

Dress for Respect Not Attention

Wear a hemline that makes you happy and feel good about yourself.  Just remember that aging stylishly is to dress for respect and not attention!  Before your inbetweener self reaches for that mini hemline skirt, please consider this:

What do you have to prove and why do you care?

Your wisdom will always be sexier and more valued than anything you wear.

When you reach for and put on that mini hemline

Look at a mirror to see if you look fine.

And consider this always please!

Do you really want everyone seeing your wrinkly inbetweener knees?
