My closet is fairly small so I turn over by clothes semi-annually based on the seasons. The spring and summer dresses, bathing suits and shorts go to storage and the sweaters, corduroys and boots come out for winter and fall seasons. I also take advantage of the turnover to purge what I no longer love, wear or need. Year after year there are certain pieces that are tried and true and come back into my fall wardrobe as staple pieces. Here are the 5 “basics” you must have in your closet.
Blazers – A must have in any closet. Grab a blazer instead of a cardigan for a sophisticated look. Dress with jeans and tee for dinner out with friends or with tailored pants and wedges for work. Go with navy or black colors that go with everything. Perfect mid-season staple when you don’t need a coat but cool enough for an extra put together layer. In Louisville you can wear a blazer almost year-round as an everyday coat.
Tee’s – Keep it classy with solid neutral colors (black, white or camel). Easy, informal and goes with everything from skirts, jeans to tailored pants (throw a blazer over the tee for a more polished look).
Jeans – Dark, skinny fit in a high or midrise waist. The high waist jeans are so comfortable and complement every shape. Skinny jeans will go with almost all shoes and boots and in a darker hue can be dressed up or down.
Turtlenecks – Are timeless. Not everyone is as big a fan of the turtleneck as myself because I love them. I’m always cold so they are warm and like the basic tee, they go with everything in my closet and instantly add class and sophistication to any look.
Slip on Sneakers – Comfortable, easy, many styles and colors to choose from. I’ll say it again, comfortable.
