DIY Weekend Room Redo – Master Bedroom

The most recent DIY Weekend Room Redo was in the master bedroom.  The main goal of this weekend redo was to lighten up the space.  I only updated two things in the room.  An accent wall and the fan light fixture.  Those two updates made a big impact in the room to make it feel updated, bright and modern.  Here is a step by step guide to the DIY weekend room redo for the master bedroom.

STEP 1: GET RID OF DARK ACCENT WALL

The master bedroom gets very little natural light.  Even though three of the four walls are light, this dark blue accent wall needed to be updated in order to brighten up the room.

Step 2: Choose the Medium to Cover Wall

Blue Grasscloth Peel and Stick Wallpaper by RoomMates.  I purchased from The Home Depot online.  Shipped free to the house.  My wall is 125 sq feet.  I ordered 6 rolls and had plenty left over.  Cost was about $125 to cover one wall.

I’ve never wallpapered anything before in my life.  However, I chose to use wallpaper because:

  1. I wanted to lighten the wall but still have an “accent” feature through color or design.  Wallpaper by RoomMates has tons of patterns and colors to choose from.
  2. Wallpaper now comes in a peel & stick version.  No messy glue or paste.  It’s basically working with large sheets of contact paper for your wall.
  3. No commitment if I didn’t like it.  Peels off  easily with no residue left behind.
  4. Minimal tools needed

Step Three: Application

Before you begin have a large area big enough to lay out 3 columns of paper side by side.  This way you can match up the seams and the pattern before applying to the wall.  NOTE:  THIS CAN BE DONE WITH ONE PERSON BUT MUCH EASIER WITH TWO.  One person to be on the ladder holding the paper high, the other person to peel paper away from sticky back and hold paper away from wall low.  Ladder person can line up pattern easier after it was already laid out on floor.

Every other row installed on wall will be “shorted”.  In order to match up the pattern exactly.  Piecing in the leftover areas last.  This was very easy and I was surprised how well it all blended together.  Also, the overage on the ceiling and floor also due to lining up the pattern.  Trim excess at very end.  Once paper is on wall and lined up to your satisfaction, use a roller or flat edge plastic scraper to reinforce and smooth out any bubbles (big bubbles need to be removed as you install).  Again, very easy process.

The most tedious part is making sure the pattern lines up perfectly.  When pattern lines up exactly, no seams are present.  If pattern is off by the slightest bit (as shown), a seam is noticeable.  This was the only frustrating part.  If you are a perfectionist (like me) you want the pattern to line up perfectly.  Sometimes they line up with no problem, other times we had to unpeel and restick 4-5 times to get it exact.  Last step is to trim the extra from the ceiling and floor board.

Step Four: Update Fan Light Fixture

I would have loved to get rid of the fan all together and replace with a great chandelier find from a vendor’s village.  However, our room runs very hot and the fan is a necessity.  I shopped for “replacement” light covers but they were all generic and dull.  I created my own light fixture from a $30 candle holder from the At Home store.

I broke out the glass candle holder from inside.  Inverted the piece and attached it to the fan with zip ties.  I then took off the rope handle and hot glued it to the fan base as decoration and to cover up the tin foil.

Step Five: Decorate and Enjoy!
