DIY BATHROOM REFRESH

This may be the biggest bang for my buck update I’ve done so far.  The transformation in the basement bathroom is astounding!  The room appears larger, is way more functional and although there’s no natural light it is much brighter.    Since there was no major construction in the space I was able to DIY (do it yourself) the entire bathroom refresh so the update was done economically.  It is also easily repeatable for anyone else looking to refresh a space on a budget!   Check out the before and after DIY bathroom refresh and how I did it below.

Before and After

Side by side comparison of the before and after DIY bathroom refresh.  Scroll to bottom for how much I actually spent, what I bought and what I didn’t.  As well as a summary of the updates I did to transform the space on a dime!

What I did

  • Removed existing hardware (towel bar, toilet paper holder, hooks, toothbrush holder, etc) and repaired all the walls.  Blog on DIY wall repair already in the works!
  • Painted walls with Sherwin Williams Alabaster SW 7008.  I’ve used this neutral white color in other rooms of my home and it looks good everywhere!  It is not a stark white but not as warm as beige.  It is a favorite of mine because it goes with any decorating style or color palette.  If you ever are unsure of paint colors I highly recommend trying Samplize.com paint samples.  They have saved me lots of time and money when it comes to picking the right paint color.  Here is a post of my review of the company HERE.
  • Painted wood medicine cabinet.  Sanded, primed then painted the wood cabinet same color as walls (Alabaster).
  • The rest is decor!  I spent less than $250 on new decor.  The new purchases include a small dresser, two decorative hanging shelves, a wine rack (YUP!  the TP holder is actually a wine rack! LOL) and a three shelf stand all from Home Goods as well as a 4ft round rug from Amazon here.  All other decor is reused from around my home.

Painted the medicine cabinet same color as the walls so it blends better in the room. Also swapped out the pull from gold to black to match the dresser pulls.

The wine rack used as a TP holder may be my favorite repurposed item in this space

I ALWAYS decorate a space using faux plants. A natural element with a pop of color that goes with everything

New dresser was necessary for storage space of extra towels. Before the room was void of any storage making it very inefficient

By zip tying this wire shelf to a decorative ladder serves multi-purposes. Ladder provides height in an area that it is needed, shelf hold decorative jars that hide odor spray and shelf distracts eye from noticing the commercial style toilet pipes

I regularly use decor from other rooms in the home. The picture is of my parent's old hunting property in Michigan where I spent many summers and weekend roaming the great outdoors
